Give St. Louis Day’s Innovation Drives Giving Day Success
- May 1, 2019
Since Give STL Day started in 2014, the 24-hour giving event has raised over $10 million for nonprofits in the area. Give STL Day 2019 is sure to continue the trend of generosity—in no small part because of the team at the St. Louis Community Foundation running the event.
St. Louis has a rich history of philanthropy. The St. Louis Community Foundation, originally known as the St. Louis Trust, was established in 1915, becoming just the second community foundation in the country. Over the 104 years that have followed, the St. Louis Community Foundation has worked to make charitable giving an integral part of life in the region. Since 1974, they’ve given over $450 million in grants to deserving organizations. Over half of that money—$250 million to be exact— was distributed in the past 5 years alone.
Among the 6 admirable tenants of their mission is the goal of “making giving simple and efficient.” While CiviCore certainly can’t take credit for helping the St. Louis Community Foundation responsibly steward charitable assets or take leadership in community issues, we can assist with making giving as simple and enjoyable as possible, and are honored to support Give STL Day with the CiviCore Giving Platform.
How Give STL Day Utilizes the CiviCore Giving Platform
Over the past 3 years that Give STL Day has partnered with CiviCore, they’ve taken advantage of many features available on the CiviCore Giving Platform. They’ve often been among the first to test out new functionalities, providing invaluable feedback from their experience that allows us to improve moving forward, making the platform better for all CiviCore clients.
Give STL Day has been using peer to peer fundraising as part of their day of giving since their 2018 giving event. Peer to peer fundraising, also called peer to peer campaigns, allows committed donors to create their own unique fundraising page in support of a particular nonprofit. The campaign creator can set a goal of how much they’d like to raise and share the page with their network via email and social media.
This year the Give STL team has opted into all the latest campaign updates, empowering their nonprofits and the committed donors who create campaigns to raise more. To help campaign creators keep their pages looking at fresh as possible, Give STL Day goes above and beyond, providing icons, social media graphics, and messaging suggestions on their site. And they don’t keep these assets a secret, either: the Give STL team provides resources such as logos, a press release, social media posts, and more for any committed donor interested in spreading the word about the online giving day.
The St Louis Community Foundation also utilizes CiviCore’s scheduled donations feature. By opening donations several weeks before the day of giving itself, Give STL Day provides donors an opportunity to do research and take their time selecting the pre-approved nonprofit(s) they’d like to support. When ready, donors enter their payment information as usual. Without the donor having to give it another thought, their credit card will be charged at midnight when the giving day begins. With scheduled donations, donors can take care of donating while it’s on their mind rather than having to remember to donate on the day itself, then rest easy knowing they’ve already done their part in supporting the community.
New this year, the Give STL team is utilizing a goal function on the CiviCore Giving Platform. With this feature, each participating nonprofit can set a goal of how much money they’d like to raise during the giving day. Throughout the event, their profile will display progress being made towards their organization’s donation goal.
Research shows that people tend to donate more when they are within reach of a tangible goal. We hope that by showcasing when nonprofits are close to hitting their target, people will be more incentivized to donate and help the nonprofit reach their individual goal.
In addition to these features, Give STL Day is also leveraging corporate giving in 2019 to boost the success of their annual giving day, engaging the community on yet another level.
Corporate Giving Functionality
For the first time this year, Give STL Day is utilizing the CiviCore Giving Platform Employee Giving functionality. With this feature, businesses can support the online giving event by encouraging their employees to donate which demonstrates their commitment to investing in their community.
Each participating company is issued a page to customize with their branding, messaging, and reason for participating. During the event, this page will also display a leaderboard showing the company’s progress towards their custom-set goal. When employees reach the checkout stage of donating, they indicate which corporation they work for, ensuring that their donation counts towards the company’s total.
Participating in giving events offers companies a great PR opportunity—especially when employing innovative strategies such as corporate giving. As a corporate donor, we recommend taking full advantage of your participation by posting about it on social media, including a blurb about the giving event in your next email newsletter, and reminding your customers and employees that you prioritize charitable giving. The benefit to your reputation might even increase the profitability of your business: many consumers acknowledge that they are more likely to patronize a business they know has participated in charitable giving, and potential employees are increasingly seeking socially minded organizations
In addition to the business-building benefits of corporate giving, your team will thank you for the experience as well. Working towards a collective goal is an excellent opportunity for team building and boosting morale. People are happier when they are contributing to their community, especially as a team.
In order to boost donation amounts, many companies incentivize employees to donate by offering matching funds. The corporation may set a matching goal of $1,000, meaning this is the amount they hope employees will reach in their donations. Once employees reach that goal, the corporation will throw in an additional $1,000 in matching funds, effectively doubling the company’s donation.
Give STL Day is today, May 1st! Stay tuned to their website to check out their progress.
