A giving event and music festival wrapped into one
CiviCore is thrilled to announce an exciting new client: the first annual ESSENCE Girls United Giving Challenge, as part of the 25th Essence Festival! Held annually in New Orleans, the Essence Festival is a weekend packed with concerts, conferences, exhibitions, and community-building geared towards empowering young women of color. This year, their 25th anniversary, big names will cross the stage over the course of the July 4-7 weekend, including Missy Elliot, Pharrel Williams, and Mary J. Blige. Plus, former First Lady—or “Forever First Lady,” as the festival affectionately dubs her—Michelle Obama will be speaking! We’re honored and excited to play a role in this epic weekend of women’s empowerment.
This year, Essence is announcing the addition of the ESSENCE Girls United Giving Challenge, and at the perfect time. When the potential for online giving is understood, the wisdom of the strategy is obvious. Growth in online giving is up over 12% in 2018, the 6th consecutive year of growth, according to Double the Donation. And we’re just getting started. As the average donor is 64 years old today, and Gen Xers and Millennials—who make up almost 50% of the US population and show much greater potential for online giving—there’s bound to be continued growth in giving for a great cause.
As a music festival and giving event wrapped in one, Essence Festival provides a unique opportunity for CiviCore to showcase our giving platform and our mission of driving social impact. We couldn’t be more excited to support Girls United and ESSENCE as they partner to make an indelible mark on a great cause over the July 4th holiday weekend.
During the performances and speaking engagements, the ESSENCE Festival and Girls United will run an online giving event to raise money for 7 mission-driven organizations and schools. All focus on the festival’s primary directive: empowering girls of color.
The 7 organizations participating in the ESSENCE Girls United Giving Challenge are:
BR Grow Girls
The National Coalition of 100 Black Women (Baton Rouge Chapter) in partnership with Louisiana Leadership Institute, has introduced BR Grow Girls! BR Grow Girls is a systemic mentoring initiative that advocates on behalf of black women and girls to promote leadership development and gender equity in health, education, and economic empowerment. Their programs work towards a world free of socio-economic inequality. They have chapters across the country who work to foster empowerment at the community level.
Outstanding Mature Girlz (O.M.G. Girlz):
By providing a safe space, OMG encourages healthy conversations about the issues of STDs and HIV/AIDS. Administrators hope that these conversations will keep participating girls safe and boost their self-worth.
PINK House is a personal development academy for young women in the New Orleans area. They aim to prepare girls to be leaders in their community, teaching social responsibility, effective communication, and the importance of mental and social development.
St. Katherine Drexel Prep
An all-girls, Catholic college preparatory school, St. Katherine Drexel Prep promotes holistic development through the integration of spiritual, moral, intellectual, and physical strengths. St. Katherine Drexel Prep emphasizes academic excellence as one of the aspects shaping the leaders of tomorrow.
St. Mary’s Academy
Another Catholic college preparatory school, St. Mary’s Academy educates students at the elementary through high school level. Their family-oriented program aims to address the whole person, with Christianity an equal aspect alongside critical thinking, serving the community, and acting responsibly.
The Beautiful Foundation
At The Beautiful Foundation, underserved young women are provided a safe environment for leadership development. Programs focus on self-esteem, entrepreneurial thinking, and the balance between emotional, mental, and physical well-being.
The Orchid Society:
The Orchid Society is a young professional network of African American women serving as positive role models for young minority girls. Through mentoring, community service, and social awareness programming, the program seeks to empower their community with strong female leaders who can in turn mentor their peers.
In order to support these incredible organizations, CiviCore will be integrating the CiviCore Giving Platform with the Essence Festival app. The Essence Festival is enabling peer to peer functionality for the giving event, allowing dedicated supporters to create their own fundraising pages for any of the participating organizations.
CiviCore is excited to venture into Instagram giving for the Essence Festival. This technology is brand new for the social media app, and our team is eager to learn how we can utilize it to facilitate even easier online giving. Follow Essence Festival on Instagram and stay tuned to their stories for updates on events and donations.
The Essence Festival will further promote charitable giving for Girls United via leaderboards displayed around the event and on each of the stages. This way speakers can reference the contributions being made and encourage anyone watching—live or via social media—to join in.
In addition to the incredible organizations listed above, the Essence Festival has created an the Girls United organization. Through this program, girls ages 12-19 are encouraged to increase their academic potential, self-love, and leadership skills.
One program in particular, entitled Girls United: Beautiful Possibilities, awarded six young women ages 16-17 the opportunity to learn from professionals in the beauty industry. In addition to receiving $10,000 for college, each participant will help shape a collection for Ulta Beauty, gaining firsthand experience in the industry.
