Domestic Violence Awareness Month: What You Need to Know
- October 14, 2015
Did you know that every minute, approximately 20 people are physically abused by a partner in the U.S.? The prevalence of domestic violence continues throughout the U.S.; while increased awareness has helped to lower domestic abuse over the past decade, millions of individuals nationwide continue to be victimized. To continue to grow awareness, spotlight services and foundations, educate society, and overall end domestic violence, October serves as Domestic Violence Awareness month.
In 1987, Domestic Violence Awareness month was founded to create awareness and education concerning the basic human right to be free from violence and abuse and to connect advocates across the nation who are working to end violence. While Domestic Violence Awareness month officially emerged in October 1987, its conception was in October of 1981 as the “Day of Unity.” The day soon grew into an entire week devoted to awareness, before becoming what it is today. This October marks the 18th annual Domestic Violence Awareness month, focusing on educating our society on domestic violence and abuse, highlighting the efforts made by scores of anti-domestic violence foundations, and giving the nation pause for thought as we contemplate the impact that domestic violence has had.
Advocates nationwide utilize Domestic Violence Awareness month to educate those in abusive relationships and those witnessing them. Many individuals do not understand the extent and complexity of domestic violence, how to assist victimized friends and family, or even the basic nuances of domestic violence. Over the past few decades, domestic violence services have grown beyond simply providing emergency shelter services, and with increased awareness due to programs and Domestic Violence Awareness month, the effects of family violence have become better understood.
